As with many people, vacation is often my downfall when it comes to living a healthy lifestyle. The combination of letting your guard down, being in strange places, and eating on the road can be deadly. We just returned from a challenging vacation, and I wanted to share some thoughts with you.

We returned from a weeklong vacation last night – more on that later. For now, I just wanted to post a quick note documenting the fact that I just rowed my one millionth meter on my Concept2 rowing machine (it’s a Model E for the curious).
I mentioned about a week ago that I had starting tracking my weight online with PhysicsDiet. At that time, however, I didn’t have enough data to post a meaningful chart. Now I do, so here it is…
Over the past week or so, I’ve noticed a bit of tenderness along the inside of my elbow joint. The symptoms are most consistent with the beginning of medial epicondylitis (commonly called Golfer’s Elbow or Little League Elbow), so I’ve decided to take it easy in hopes of avoiding a chronic problem.
A few weeks ago, I alluded to the fact that I’d soon be writing more about my health and fitness goals for 2010. Well, that time has come, and I’ve decided that I’m just going to focus one one goal for this year…
This is just a quick note to say Happy New Year! We’ve been out of town since before Christmas, and won’t be back home for another couple of days. While we’ve been away, I’ve managed to squeeze in a few walks and lots of playing with the kids (including an afternoon of football), but nothing else.
One of my favorite forms of exercise is rowing. Thus, I was thrilled when I saw that Concept2 is sponsoring a Holiday Rowing Challenge. In short, they’ll make a charitable donation of $0.02 per 1000m (1km) rowed for everyone that rows over 100km between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve.
Friday afternoon, I decided to head upstairs for a nice Independence Day row. I did my usual 5 minute warmup (light rowing, roughly 1 km) and then got off the erg to stretch. Unfortunately, I got distracted (by what I can’t recall) and ended up jumping back on without actually stretching.
We just got back from vacation, and boy was it hard to maintain any sort of healthy routine while we were on the road. As I noted previously, one of the big limitations was that the only workout “equipment” that I had at my disposal was the floor and the great outdoors.
I have two primary rules when it comes to working out: (1) Never skip more than one day in a row, and (2) Finish any workout that I start, barring injury or the threat thereof. These aren’t written in stone, but I do my best to follow them.
