Holy crap. I went for a run with my wife yesterday, and boy did I suffer! Whenever she takes the kids to Taekwando, she runs a 4+ mile out-and-back. She’s told me in the past how much she enjoys it, so yesterday I decided to join her.

When I first started running, I kept reading about how I should be running at a pace where I’m breathing easily enough to carry on a conversation. At the time, this was a bit disheartening because there was no way I could maintain “conversational” breathing for any length of time while out running.
As many of you know, I started running a few months ago. When I was just starting out, I talked about things like why I wanted to start running, how long it takes to become a runner, etc. Now that I’ve completed the process, I wanted to share some thoughts on how to start running.
Yesterday afternoon, I went for the longest run of my life. The total distance was 6.5 miles, and it took me 73 minutes to complete. I ran every step of the way – albeit somewhat slowly – and I felt pretty good at the end.
Over the weekend, I picked up another couple of running partners. Ever since my first 5k, which I ran with our twelve year old, our eight and ten year old have been begging to run one with us.
Last weekend, I ran my second 5k. This came on the heels of my first 5k just 12 days prior (on Memorial Day). This time around, my race report will be relatively short, as there’s much less to report.
I’m sitting here basking in the glow of my first 4 mile run. I’m also trying to stop sweating. On the way home from work last night, I got a text from my son that read “Just ran 4.2 miles. Own.” Ouch.
Well… My first 5k road race has come and gone. All in all, it went really well. My son and I decided to run together instead of racing, though I suspect he would’ve wiped the floor with me if I had let him. Next time around, we’ll probably race for time.
And… Done. I’ve made it through Week Nine of the Couch-to-5k running program, and my first 5k is actually tomorrow (Memorial Day) morning. This past week went quite well, and I deviated a bit from the program to get myself ready for the race.
With my first 5k race just around the corner, I wanted to spend a bit of time talking about what constitutes a “good” 5k time. I now have several test runs under my belt, and have been finishing in roughly 34 minutes. Curious about how that time stacks up against other runners, I did some digging.
