Well… I’ve successfully completed Week Seven of the Couch-to-5k running program. The good news is that the runs haven’t been all that challenging. The bad news is that my hip pain has gotten worse.
My run on Sunday went reasonably well, and I covered a total of 2.89 miles (including the warmup and cool down). According to RunKeeper, I burned 325 calories. By the time Monday rolled around, however, my hip was really bothering me.
That afternoon (and after having chatted with Blaine Moore), I decided that I probably needed to buy new (and better) shoes. Unfortunately, we don’t have a great source for running shoes in town, so I came up empty.
On Tuesday I felt better. I slowed down a bit, covering only 2.65 miles total (and burning an estimated 317 calories). I also backed off on all other exercise in hopes of working through my running issues.
On Thursday, I decided to track the run itself separate from the warmup and cool down walks. I covered 2.33 miles running, with an additional 0.55 miles of walking (total).
I then took two days completely off. No elliptical, no rowing, and no wood chopping.
I’m getting a bit ahead of myself here, but I felt considerably better on Sunday, so I decided to kick off Week Eight with my scheduled 28 minute run. Unfortunately, my hip pain came back with a vengeance.
I managed 2.48 miles running (plus 0.54 walking) but my left hip had tightened up and was quite painful. At that point, I decided that I needed to take a week off to recover, and that I also had to get to a specialty running store for a proper shoe fitting.
And so here I am… I’ve been warming my hip up with a heating pad to get the blood flowing, doing some light stretching, and then icing it to reduce the swelling. It actually feels considerably better this morning, so I’m hoping that a week off will be what I need.
I also bought a new pair of running shoes, and am fairly confident that they will improve the situation considerably. In the mean time, I’ll just continue eating as well as I can and (hopefully) healing.
I’m going to go ahead and post Week Eight for those that are following along even though I won’t be doing it myself until next week.

Good luck! Hope the rest and shoes help with the hip issues.
