Last weekend, I ran my second 5k. This came on the heels of my first 5k just 12 days prior (on Memorial Day). This time around, my race report will be relatively short, as there’s much less to report.
We arrived a bit earlier this time around and thus had more time to warm up and stretch. After checking in, my son and I walked for 5-10 minutes and then jogged for a few minutes before spending some time stretching.
As race time approached, we wandered to the starting line, found a spot in the middle of the pack, and patiently waited for the start. Once again, we were running in a relatively small field.
The race course featured a short out-and-back and then two loops around the park, followed by a different out-and-back before we crossed the finish line. Fortunately, it was a relatively flat course, with some gentle inclines along the way.
Once again, we started out fast with a 9:30 pace over the first mile. As we entered our second lap, I was feeling strong but my son faded a bit and dropped back in the pack. Meanwhile, the race leaders motored on by, lapping much of the field.
RunKeeper pegged my second mile at 10:03, with my third mile coming in at a 9:57 pace. I ended up crossing the line in 30:47, with my son coming in just under 40 seconds later.
All in all, I was quite pleased as I cut 0:35 off my previous time. My son was disappointed, though his time was nearly identical to the last time around despite being worn out from a hard week of swimming.
Next up? I’m not sure, though we’ve now run races in two consecutive months, and have been talking about doing at least one race per month for a year.
