A few weeks ago, I alluded to the fact that I’d soon be writing more about my health and fitness goals for 2010. Well, that time has come, and I’ve decided that I’m just going to focus one one goal for this year…
Ready? Here it is:
I’m planning on losing 15 pounds.
Early in the year, I weighed in at 245 pounds, though I was actually 252 pounds back on November 8th. I attribute much of this progress to the Concept2 Holiday Rowing Challenge. As of this past weekend, I was still holding steady at 245. I actually consider this to be a small victory, as much of January was taken up with business travel, dining out, and very little time for exercise.
Why 15 pounds?
I’ve decided on 15 pounds because I consider it to be a very attainable goal. In fact, back during the summer of 2008 I was down around 233 pounds after a few months of regular rowing, and could practically feel the pounds melting away. Unfortunately, life soon got in the way, I lost focus, and my weight then drifted back up to where it started.
So… 230 is a goal that I feel quite likely to hit in the foreseeable future. Once I hit a goal, I’ll re-evaluate. If, on the other hand, I initially set a goal that’s far too ambitious, I’m likely to fall off the wagon and make little to no progress. That’s just how I’m wired. So… Baby steps.
How will I lose the weight?
I’ve never been big on dieting. Instead, my goal is to make incremental and (hopefully) sustainable changes. As Mac over at GetFitSlowly has pointed out, I need to create a caloric deficit. I plan to do this in two ways: by making smarter eating decisions, and by working our more consistently. If I can achieve these two things, I’ll be able to make steady progress.
As far as exercise goes, I made my minimum goal of two solid workouts per week throughout January, though sometimes barely. For whatever reason, I just couldn’t get back in the groove, even after my travel schedule settled down. However, things started to turn the corner this past week. I’ve gotten back on my rower, and just last night I ripped off the fastest 6km piece that I’ve done in a long, long time.
So, there you have it. My one simple goal for 2010.
