One of my favorite forms of exercise is rowing. Thus, I was thrilled when I saw that Concept2 is sponsoring a Holiday Rowing Challenge. In short, they’ll make a charitable donation of $0.02 per 1000m (1km) rowed for everyone that rows over 100km between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve.
In reality, this isn’t a particularly large carrot that they’re dangling in front of us. After all, we’re only talking about a couple of bucks. Despite that, this challenge has been oddly motivating to me.
As of last night, we’d reached the halfway mark, and I’d rowed just shy of 57km. That works out to an average of roughly 4km per day, though I’ve actually been rowing 7km-9km at a time, with days off in between.
Projecting forward, I should easily make the 100km mark by Christmas Eve, though we’re leaving town a few days before Christmas, so I may have to squeeze in an extra session somewhere down the line.
The real challenge for me will be to stay on a roll through the Christmas, New Year’s, and beyond. Travel is often my downfall, and I’ll be on the road visiting family for 10-12 days, back home for a few days, then out of town on business for a week.
Not only will it be more difficult to squeeze in workouts while on the road, but it will also be more difficult to eat healthy. My primary goal is to just hold steady so I’m ready to pick up where I left off after things settle down.

There is an interactive indoor rower finder at concept2.com! You can search for hotels that might have indoor rowers in the gyms before you book work travel. It is a great way to stay on target with your goals!
Great job from the Concept2 team!
Meredith: Yep, I’m familiar with that, but we’ll be staying with family over the holidays, and I don’t have a hotel choice for the business trip. Then again, maybe I can find a local gym with a daily access fee…
