On Monday, I was offered the opportunity to get a swine flu (H1N1) shot through work. I jumped at the chance, but my family wasn’t able to take part. Earlier today, however, my wife called with good news…
Our local Rite-Aid had just gotten a bunch of swine flu vaccine, and there weren’t any restrictions on who could get it. Thus, as soon as school let out, she packed up the kids and headed over to do the deed. The best part is that our five year old spent the rest of the day running around telling us that he’s hungry for bacon and then bursting in laughter.
Flu shot vs. FluMist
While my wife and kids were only offered the injectable vaccine, I had the option of getting an old school shot or the new-fangled FluMist. As you may recall, I got a FluMist seasonal flu vaccination about three weeks ago, so the choice had really been made for me…
As it turns out, you’re not supposed to get both the seasonal flu and H1N1 vaccines as FluMist within a four week period. Since I didn’t want to wait another week, I opted for the shot.
No side effects
As far as vaccine reactions or side effects go, my experience was pretty uneventful. That’s not particularly surprising, though, as I’ve never really reacted negatively to vaccinations.
I did have what felt like a low grade fever for awhile on Tuesday, but it’s unclear if that was related to the swine flu shot, or if it was a byproduct of the minor cold I’ve been battling. Either way, it was no big deal. In fact, it didn’t even stop me from rowing 8 km or doing a bunch of pushups.

My wife, my three year old, and I have all gotten our H1N1 vaccines this year. I have to take my three year old back tomorrow to get his booster. We have an infant so it is more for his protection than anything else.
