First Four Miler and Second 5k Race

by FitMan on June 9, 2010 · 4 comments

I’m sitting here basking in the glow of my first 4 mile run. I’m also trying to stop sweating. On the way home from work last night, I got a text from my son that read “Just ran 4.2 miles. Own.” Ouch.

Talk about throwing down the gauntlet…

For background, We live on a dead end road out in the country (more or less). We’re 0.15 miles from one end, and 0.20 miles from the other end, such that one complete roundtrip from end-to-end is 0.7 miles.

Unfortunately, once you leave our neighborhood, you’re on what amounts to a rural highway with virtually no shoulder. Thus, we mostly run laps. It’s not all bad, though, as we live in largely wooded, low density neighborhood which makes for a nice backdrop.

Anyway, back to the story… Both my son and I have been running somewhere in 4-5 lap range on a fairly regular basis. Conveniently, four full laps plus the short half is exactly 5k. But last night my son upped the ante and did six laps, or 4.2 miles.

Not to be outdone by a 12 year old, I did the same thing this morning. Honestly, I think I’m starting to turn the corner running-wise as I really started to settle in lose track of time and distance about halfway through.

The only hiccup was that I got disrupted for 2-3 minutes talking to a county utility worker who stopped by the house, though I did run the whole way, and I felt pretty good doing it. According to RunKeeper, I covered 4.23 miles.

Oh, and one more thing…

I just registered for my second 5k race. It’s in three days. The course should be much friendlier than the hilly beast that we ran on Memorial Day. I’ve been feeling rather slow lately, so I’m not sure if I’ll actually post a good time, but I don’t really care.

Things seem a little different now than they did 3 months ago it seems. :)

Congrats! Once you hit the 4 mile range things do change. You get into a groove. If I’m running long distances then some time around 3.5 miles I hit my stride and go into cruise control where I seem to exert much less effort to keep a decent pace.

Been enjoying this website, so I thought I’d make a helpful suggestion. If you can loose track of time, you can tight track of time too. Don’t mean to be a smartass, and keep up the good bloggin’.

Cheers!

Ugh. One of my least favorite typos! Thanks for pointing it out, Ron.

And yes, I do know the difference between loose and lose. :-)
