Caffeine, Exercise, Alcohol, and Snoring

I have a secret to share with you: I snore. While I don’t sound like a lumberjack sawing logs, I’m definitely not a silent-sleeper. Over the past couple of years, I’ve noticed some correlations between my daily routine and the extent of my snoring, so I thought I’d share what I’ve learned with you.

Snoring and caffeine

During a typical day, I tend to consume a good bit of caffeine. At times in the past, I’ve flirted with kicking the caffeine addiction, and guess what? After completely cutting out the caffeine, my snoring will subside.

Unfortunately, this usually only last for a few weeks (maybe months) before I give in and start consuming caffeine again. Once that happens, the snoring problem comes back.

Snoring and exercise

Interestingly, when I’m adhering to a regular exercise schedule, my snoring is almost completely cured. This is true even if I’m still sucking down the caffeine. As long as I’m getting a decent cardio workout every other day or so, I’m good to go.

As above, however, if I let my exercise program slide, the snoring returns with a vengeance.

Snoring and alcohol

Finally… If I drink alcohol before bed, all bets are off. Even if I’ve been steering clear of the caffeine and working out like a madman, having more than a drink or two of alcohol will make me snore up a storm.

The good news here is that the effects of alcohol on snoring seem to be short-lived. In other words, having a few drinks one night doesn’t affect my sleep or snoring on subsequent nights.

How to stop snoring

While there are often deeper issues associated with snoring, curing your snoring problem might be as simple as cutting back on your caffeine intake, limiting your alcohol consumption, and/or doing some regular cardiovascular exercise.

If you snore and want to stop, I’d suggest making a few minor lifestyle adjustments before looking for a deeper cause. The bonus here is that these things (consuming less caffeine, drinking alcohol in moderation, and exercising regularly) have other health benefits that go well beyond their impact on your snoring.

Losing 40 pounds cured my snoring problem. I was not fat, in relation to most people… and people who know me well do not believe that I even had 40 pounds to lose, but I did. Point is… losing weight is a BIG help too, in addition to all the things mentioned in the article.
